Lucid dreams are the conscious perception of one's state while in the dream world. In this state, you are able to control the content of the dream. Anything is possible because you realize you are dreaming. One of my favorite things to do is flying in a lucid dream. Once you experience one, it gets easier and easier to keep having them, but if you are first starting out, I found the easiest way to experience a lucid dream is by a simple exercise.

Usually the way this happens is through trial and error when you are dreaming and something completely out of the ordinary happens in the dream, that makes you question the dream itself. Once you question it, then immediately you are aware you are dreaming. For example, I once had a dream that I was in a movie theater and I was watching the movie, then suddenly I heard a noise behind me, so I turned around and saw the movie theater screen behind me as well as in front of me. It caused me to question it. Movie theaters are not set-up that way, it is not ‘normal’ to have two screens. One in front and back. Usually in the back, that is where the exit is and up above that is where the projector is located. Instantly I knew I was dreaming.

Instead of trial and error, use this method:

Make a three by five card or the size of a business card or credit card etc. On one side write “Am I Dreaming?” and on the other side draw a symbol that means something to you or something simple like an eye.

Next, put it in your pocket or somewhere easily accessible and periodically throughout your days pull out the card and look at the side where you wrote “Am I Dreaming?” then turn it over and look at the symbol that you drew. It does not matter how many times you look at it during the day, as long as it is enough that you remember to continuously look at both sides through your days, but the more you look at it, the better and faster results.

Usually it takes about a week to a month, but eventually you will pull out your card within a dream because your dreams are a reflection of reality. Yet when you pull out the card within the dream, then you will know it instantaneously because something will be different. For me I looked at the “Am I Dreaming?” side then flipped it over. The symbol I had was an eye, but in the dream, the eye seemed different. Almost like a 3D version.
