Wikipedia describes polyphasic sleep (also known as Da Vinci sleep or Uberman sleep) as a sleep pattern intended to give 30-40 hours of more awake time a week then average. This can be achieved by spreading out sleep into short naps of around 20–45 minutes every four hours throughout the day and night (24 hours). I first heard about this on Steve Pavlina's Blog.

Sources say it takes about a week or two to get used to it. A monophasic sleep cycle ‘normal sleep cycle’ is 90 minutes total REM sleep and it occurs late in this cycle. REM is the most important critical and deepest phase of sleep. Deprived of REM for too long serious negative consequences can occur. Polyphasic sleep programs the body to enter REM sleep in the instant when you begin sleeping. With monophasic sleep (usually 8 hours a night), REM happens once sleeping for a much longer period. General with monophasic sleep the REM is present only 1.5 hours total spread through the entire cycle.

Little scientific research has been performed on polyphasic sleeping. Much, if not most, of the polyphasic sleep information comes from the reports of independent testers, but during the first week people claim experiencing sleep deprivation, as the body conditions itself to adjust to shorter sleep cycles. Yet, after your body adjusts you will feel good, maybe even better than before.

This is supposedly the way that Leonardo Da Vinci, Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, Henry Ford and a fluctuate list of other legends often slept.

My passion for wanting to do this is to see what altered states of consciousness it brings, yet I will record all changes on every level including body effects. Being in different states of consciousness through my experience brings new insight, enlightenment, and perspectives on yourself, people, and the world around you. I have always had an interest and passion in personal development for the purpose to understand self and to share my research with everyone around me.

I will be sleeping for thirty minutes at a time, every four hours, around the clock. When I start this, I will be taking naps in cycles of 7am, 11am, and 3pm, then 7pm, 11pm, and 3am. This total is a mere three hours of sleep in a twenty-four hour period.
